May 30 deadline fast approaching for nominations for $100,000 Siminovitch Prize in Theatre

Just over three weeks remain until nominations close for the 2003 Siminovitch Prize in Theatre, Canada’s richest theatre prize.  The $100,000 prize will be awarded this year to a professional theatre designer – someone who has made a significant contribution to Canadian theatre in the fields of set design, costume design, lighting design, or sound design.

Anyone can submit a nomination.  The full nomination package is available from the Siminovitch Prize website at www.siminovitchprize.com.

“I am particularly pleased that we are honouring designers this year,” said Leonard McHardy, Chair of this year’s jury panel.  “These are the women and men who set the tone for all great theatre performances, and it is wonderful that they are being singled out at last for such a prestigious prize as the Siminovitch.”

The Siminovitch Prize is awarded in three-year cycles – first to directors, then playwrights, and then designers.  This year completes the first cycle.

Previous winners of the Prize are Daniel Brooks (in 2001, the inaugural year of the Prize, for Direction) and Carole Fréchette (in 2002, for Playwriting).

BMO Financial Group is the major sponsor of the Prize.
