BMO Capital Markets, the investment and corporate banking arm of BMO Financial Group (NYSE, TSX: BMO), has released a new report entitled Mergers and Acquisitions in the Packaging Industry – Annual Review. The report provides an overview of the industry, a review of the level of M&A activity in various sectors, including active strategic and financial acquirers and a review of financial parameters, including valuations.
“The packaging M&A market has been very active in 2005 and 2006, driven by a favorable lending environment and an abundance of available equity capital,” said Doug Lawson, Managing Director and Head of BMO Capital Markets' Packaging Group. “We expect a continuation of both attractive valuations and a strong level of M&A activity in the packaging industry.”

Announced packaging deal volume continued to increase with 341 announced transactions for the 12 month period ending June 30, 2006

Valuations of transactions with reported multiples reached the highest average level since before 2001

Strategic acquirers were active, accounting for 63% of transactions in the industry worldwide
