TORONTO, October 14, 2010 – BMO Capital Markets has been named the best overall institutional equity research, sales and trading team in Canada according to the 2010 Brendan Wood International (BWI) survey.

The annual report, which polls the views of leading institutional investors in Canadian equities, tracks the performance of institutional equity research, sales and trading firms on a number of metrics including research quality, sales service, investment ideas, trading service and effectiveness in trade execution, among others.

“We are very pleased that our clients have voted us the No.1 overall institutional equities team in Canada,” said Mike Miller, Head of Equity Products & Research, BMO Capital Markets.  “First in sales, first in trading, first for research quality and first for having the No. 1 overall institutional equity franchise; these are outstanding results.”

BMO ranked 1st overall as an institutional equity franchise (for research, sales and trading combined) with the highest “Reputational Franchise” score. In this category, BMO scored significantly above all other firms.

In equity research, BMO ranked 1st for research quality this year and placed second for overall research franchise. The “Research Franchise” score reflects a combination of the “Research Quality” scores and the penetration of research with investors.

“Our Canadian research team has been highly ranked for 30 consecutive years in the Brendan Wood survey.  As we continue to build our capabilities in the U.S., our goal is to become a leading provider of equity research for the entire North American stock market and all mining companies trading on major exchanges globally. We are building a North American firm with a broad offering based on highly experienced, industry-expert research analysts,” added Mr. Miller.

In equity sales, BMO ranked 1st overall and 1st in four of the six categories Brendan Wood measures: Overall Quality of Sales Service, Quality of Investment Ideas, Valuable and Timely Contact, Share of Top Gun Sales Professionals.

In equity trading, BMO ranked 1st overall and 1st in four of the six categories Brendan Wood measures: Overall Quality of Trader Service, Effectiveness in Execution, Puts Client Interests First, Share of Top Gun Trading Relationships.

BMO Capital Markets has been steadily hiring within all areas of its business, especially in its equities group. Last week, BMO announced it has appointed a new senior management team to lead the expansion of its U.S. cash equities business. With a new management team in place, BMO Capital Markets is looking significantly to expand its presence in the U.S. cash equities marketplace based on building a reputation for best-in-class research for U.S. equities.

“As we build out our franchise in 2011, institutional investors are going to be quite surprised by the capability we are building at BMO Capital Markets.  We will be hiring more U.S. equity research analysts in 2011. We are already providing full research coverage of 932 stocks with a team of 66 equity analysts, six macro/strategy analysts and a total research staff of 195.  Today, we are well-recognized for the quality of our Canadian and Global Mining research.  Over the next few years we will become one of the highest-quality sources of investment research for U.S. equities,” said Mr. Miller.

“We are working to cover more mining stocks than any other brokerage firm globally with our total coverage already at 161 companies.  We aim to be a leader in mining on a global basis but much of our investment focus is on building in the United States.  Our current coverage of 515 U.S. equities will continue to grow as we focus on hiring highly experienced, industry-expert analysts,” added Mr. Miller.  “In 2010, we appeared for the first time at 15th place overall for U.S. equity research in the Greenwich Associates survey and BMO was the only Canadian-based firm to appear in the 2010 Institutional Investor All-America Research Team.  We hope to steadily gain recognition in the U.S. marketplace for excellence in equity research.”
