BMO Capital Markets Commends Canada and India for Launching Trade Negotiations

Toronto, November 12, 2010 – BMO Capital Markets today commended the governments of Canada and India for beginning negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.

“Stronger networks are needed between India and Canada.  We applaud Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the extraordinary leadership they have shown,” said Michael Rayfield, Vice Chair, BMO Capital Markets.  “While trade between the two countries has risen sharply over the past decade, there's still significant potential to be tapped, especially in agriculture and agri-foods, infrastructure, information and communications technologies, extractive industries, life sciences and enabling services.”

The India-Canada trade relationship has room to grow.  For example, total trade between India and Canada is three times smaller than the size of trade between India and Australia, even though the Canadian economy is about 50% larger than that of Australia.

“BMO Capital Markets is working to spark trade and investment between Canada and India, in both directions,” added Mr. Rayfield.  “BMO Financial Group is highly committed to the South East Asian population in Canada and to building Canada's relationship with India, the world's largest democracy.”

BMO was the first Canadian bank to open an investment banking office – in Mumbai in 2008 – to provide advisory services and to help Indian companies expand internationally.

BMO Capital Markets is well positioned to help Indian and North American companies:
