TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 15, 2012) - BMO Bank of Montreal today congratulated Glen Shields FC for their community spirit after the City of Vaughan approved a new artificial turf field at Concord Thornhill Regional Park to benefit the entire community.
The Glen Shields Sun Devils U-11 girls' team was crowned the BMO Team of the Week 2011 Champion and awarded $125,000 for a soccer field refurbishment based on their pride, spirit, community commitment and passion for the game. Thousands of Canadians voted from coast-to-coast to select the Sun Devils last August.
"The BMO Team of the Week program really made a difference to this soccer team and their community," says BMO Sandy Bourne, BMO's Vice-President, Corporate Marketing. "Hopefully the Sun Devils' achievements will encourage other youth soccer teams across Canada to rise to the challenge and participate in this year's program, so they can have fun and make a difference at the same time."
Since winning the title last year, the team had been actively working with the community to receive approval from Vaughan Council on the new field refurbishment project, which has been slated to cost $1.3 million. The club has committed to contributing $130,000, and in conjunction with the BMO prize, a total of $255,000 will go towards the new field, as part of the Vaughan Council shared funding Model.
"The BMO Team of the Week competition has been an unbelievable experience for us all -- the players, their families and the entire Glen Shields community," said Tina LaRocca, Team Manager, Glen Shields Sun Devils 2000s. "It is because of BMO that our dream of having our own turf field will now become a reality. It is an incredible feeling to know that our little team did something so great that will benefit players within our club, our community and many others for years to come. Thank you BMO for the experience, the turf and most of all the everlasting memories."
BMO Team of the Week is now entering its second year, starting on April 2nd. For more information on the contest and how you can nominate a team, visit www.BMOsoccer.com.
